Supporting the Adoption of Technologies for Mango Competitiveness
Key Facts about Mango
Key Facts about Mango
- Mango is one of the most significantly traded and cultivated fruits globally (FAO, 2020).
- In the Philippines, mango is the third most exported fruit next to banana and pineapple (Department of Agriculture, 2018).
- ‘Carabao’ mango being the most produced variety contributing 80% to the total output in the country (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2021). The native ‘Carabao’ variety is considered one of the finest and sweetest mangoes in the world creating a strong drive among domestic processors to export globally (Stark et al., 2017).
Challenges
Challenges
- Export volume still remains very low at only 1-3% of the total volume of ‘Carabao’ mangoes produced over the past 10 years (Philippine Statistics Authority, 2021).
- The decreasing yield and quality of mangoes are contributed by pests and diseases, poor nutrient and water management, low adoption of improved technologies, and high postharvest losses (PCAARRD-DOST, 2019). These problems affect the industry players resulting in a low volume of high-quality mangoes in the local market and for export.
